A great friend of Ukraine and of our Municipal Institution Youth Center “High Hub” of the Vysokyi settlement council, a volunteer from the United Kingdom, Gary Carmichael, visited our institution with a training session focused on emergency pre-medical care: CPR and stopping critical bleeding.
Format — an intensive practical course (shortened program).
The main goal of the training was to provide participants with basic, life-saving skills in time-limited conditions. Since a full training course takes more than 6 hours, the program was adapted to practice the most critical algorithms that allow stabilizing a victim before professional medics arrive. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Within this block, Gary Carmichael emphasized the algorithm of actions in case of sudden cardiac arrest. How to quickly check whether the scene is safe and whether the person responds to stimuli. Participants had the opportunity to practice compression techniques: correct hand placement, depth, and frequency of chest compressions according to international standards.
Block II: Control of critical bleeding and injuries
This part of the training was dedicated to injuries that pose an immediate threat to life:
Tamponade and pressure bandages: Methods of stopping severe bleeding using improvised and specialized means.
Working with tourniquets: Proper application of a tourniquet on limbs, common mistakes, and critical time indicators.
Despite the shortened format, the training allowed participants to overcome the psychological barrier to providing assistance and to learn the “golden hour” algorithm. Gary Carmichael’s clear instructions helped structure knowledge on how to act without panic and effectively use every second to save a human life.
After the training, participants had the opportunity to take photos with Gary and thank him for his many years of volunteer assistance to Ukraine.
