On February 12, a media literacy event “Theory of Coups” and “Provoking the Mass Media” was held at the High Hub Youth Center. The main goal of the event was to explore the mechanisms behind the emergence of conspiracy theories and their influence on the modern media space. Special attention was given to how mass media, whether consciously or unconsciously, act as relays for “coup theories” to increase ratings and reach.
Key topics:
- Why we are inclined to believe in simple explanations for complex processes.
- The role of social media algorithms in creating “information bubbles.”
- The ethical responsibility of journalists when covering controversial topics.
Conclusion: Any sensational theory should be verified through multiple independent and official sources.
Distinguishing facts from interpretations.
Recommendation: Maintain media consumption hygiene by limiting content from sources with low reputational responsibility.
At the end of the event, participants were tasked with creating their own fake sensational news — winners Yaroslav and Tymofii received prizes for the best work.
The events are held as part of the project “Skills of the Third Millennium,” implemented by the High Hub Youth Center of the Vysochanska Village Council with the support of the Kharkiv Community Foundation “Toloka,” under the project “Community Pulse,” funded by the Global Fund for Community Foundations.
