Psychological support for veterans: the project of the NGO “Veterans’ Wives” as the key to adaptation

Психологічна допомога для ветеранів: проєкт ГО “Дружини ветеранів” як ключ до адаптації

Within the project “Psychological support for veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war and their family members,” comprehensive psychological assistance was provided over nine months to veterans, their families, and the families of fallen defenders of Ukraine.

Specifically, 971 hours of consultations were conducted, with 891 hours being individual consultations and 80 hours of group sessions. As a result, over 500 families were reached: 616 individuals received individual support, and another 331 people attended group consultations. In complex cases, multiple support sessions were provided to family members.

An official website of the organization was also created as part of the project – https://druzhynyveteraniv.com.ua/, where current information about the organization’s activities and useful recommendations for veterans, their families, and families of fallen defenders and heroines are available. These materials are based on the most common queries and issues raised by consultation participants during the project.

In addition to providing individual and group consultations, the project also carried out informational and educational work aimed at raising awareness among veterans and their families about psychological health, adapting to peaceful life, and overcoming stressful situations in the current context.

Project specialists prepared informational materials that were distributed among participants and also held thematic meetings aimed at supporting and uniting the veteran community and their families.

Special attention was paid to working with the families of fallen defenders, who require particular psychological support. Consultations and group sessions helped them find emotional balance, gain necessary resources for further life, and feel the support of the community. This enabled a more comprehensive approach to solving the psychological and social problems of veterans and their families.

The results of this project confirm the importance and necessity of systematic psychological support for veterans and their families. The consultations and resources provided helped hundreds of people better cope with the challenges they face after returning from war or losing a loved one.

The NGO “Wives of Veterans of the ATO” plans to continue developing support programs, expand the range of services, and involve more specialists to provide high-quality assistance to those in need.

The project was implemented by the NGO “Wives of Veterans of the ATO” with the support of ISAR Unity within the “Sectoral Civil Society Support Initiative.”

The initiative is implemented by ISAR Unity in partnership with the Ukrainian Independent Center for Political Research and the Center for Democracy and Rule of Law, with financial support from the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The project was also supported under the “VARTO: UNITY” competition program, funded by the state budget through the Ukrainian Veterans Fund of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine.
