On June 28, the Kharkiv Region Veterans Forum “Current Challenges and Systemic Solutions for Veterans, Military Personnel, and Their Families” was held in Kharkiv.
The outcome of the Forum was a Resolution that brought together proposals from veterans, military personnel, their family members, civil society organizations, volunteers, and experts regarding key changes to state policy.
The NGO “Veterans’ Wives” contributed to the development of this document, as we have been working directly with the families of military personnel, veterans, prisoners of war, those who were killed, and those missing in action for many years. Our practical experience shows that support must not be one-time but systematic, accessible, and people-centered.
The Resolution places special emphasis on issues that are critically important for the families of Ukraine’s Defenders:
- Comprehensive psychological and social support for families after a servicemember returns from combat, captivity, medical treatment, or after discharge from service;
- Continuous support for veterans after the completion of their military service;
- Support for the families of prisoners of war, missing persons, and fallen servicemembers;
- Development of an accessible system of psychosocial assistance;
- Protection of the rights of military personnel and their families;
- Creation of long-term support programs for the children of veterans and military personnel.
We believe that veterans’ policy should be built not only around benefits but around human dignity, recovery, opportunities for development, and high-quality support for families. The family is often the primary source of support for a servicemember, and therefore its needs must be an integral part of state policy.
We thank all Forum participants for their joint work, open dialogue, and commitment. Only through the combined efforts of the state, civil society, the veteran community, and families will we be able to build an effective support system for those who have defended and continue to defend Ukraine.
The NGO “Veterans’ Wives” will continue its work for the benefit of veterans, military personnel, and their families.
