Art therapy for veterans: a path to inner harmony
The team of the NGO “Wives of Veterans” continues a series of psychological trainings for veterans. This time there was a group class on art therapy for veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war. At this psychotherapeutic session, according to the author’s methodology of the project psychologist Serhiy Usenka, each of the participants tried to work with color.
“This method is one of the many varieties of art therapy, which makes it possible to assess the condition of clients when choosing the priorities of the color scheme as indicators of the display of internal harmony and interaction with the outside world,” said Serhiy Usenko.
The main task of art therapy is to “extract” a certain problem hidden behind them, to project it to the conscious level and to work out the emotions and experiences associated with it, through the mediation of symbols, images, metaphors, through which information is encoded on the unconscious level of the psyche. release from outdated or repressed emotions.
The veterans spent their time with enthusiasm, regardless of the alarm signals and their personal feelings about military service and combat experience. They returned to their families and loved ones with joy from the positive emotions they received in the circle of brothers.
At the end of the session, during the introspection of the works, we established that most often veterans choose the color green – the color of life, renewal, revival; yellow – warmth, sun and at the same time illness; red – war, violence, cruelty, as well as life and blood.
This project was created by the NGO “Wives of ATO Veterans” with the support of ISAR Unity within the framework of the project “Initiative of sectorial support of civil society”, implemented by ISAR Unity in a consortium with the Ukrainian Independent Center for Political Research and the Center for Democracy and the Rule of Law thanks to the sincere support of the American people, provided through The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and within the framework of the “WORTH: UNITY” competition program, which is financed from the state budget through the Ukrainian Veterans’ Fund of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine.
