When the choice is between bread and medicine…
Have you ever seen hands tremble while opening an ordinary bag of groceries?
How in eyes that have seen a whole lifetime, tears suddenly appear — not from grief, but from the fact that someone simply remembered you?
Our team of the NGO “Wives of Veterans” was once again traveling across Kharkiv region. We visited homes where silence reigns, broken only by the sound of an old television. Our elderly people live there. People who built this country, and today have become the most vulnerable.
Why is our help not just a “food package,” but a lifeline?
We are often asked what makes volunteering different from the work of social services, and we want to repeat again: it is important to understand one painful truth.
Social assistance is a professional tool. It is hands and feet for those who cannot get to the store on their own. A social worker comes, takes the pensioner’s money, buys what they ask for, and brings it home. This is very important, but…
The bitter reality is that for many of our elderly people, after paying utilities and buying the most basic medicines, there is nothing left in their wallet. A social worker can go to the store, but they cannot give money that simply does not exist.
This is where volunteering begins! It is when food appears on the table not because a tiny pension was enough, but because somewhere on the other side of the world or country there is a person with a big heart.
This is help from heart to heart, which literally saves lives. Because when an elderly grandmother or grandfather does not have to choose between buying blood pressure pills or half a loaf of bread — that is our shared victory over indifference.
We are endlessly grateful to those who allow us to be this ray of hope!
For 5 years in a row, incredible people have stood side by side with us. Our endless gratitude:

Your consistency means more than 3,000 people fed, peaceful sleep for our elderly, and proof that humanity has no borders. You are not just donors — you are guardians of those whom the world often forgets.
Care is the best medicine against loneliness and despair. We continue to stand our volunteer line.
