Mask Therapy as a Method of Restoring the Psychological State of War Veterans
The NGO “Veterans’ Wives” held a mask therapy workshop — a form of art therapy that helps express one’s inner state and find harmony with oneself through the creation of a mask. During the event, veterans and their family members created their own masks, which became a reflection of their emotions, memories, and strength accumulated over years of trials.
Psychologist Serhiy Usenko explained: “Mask therapy allows people to express what is difficult to put into words. For veterans, it is a safe way to relive traumatic experiences, to look at them from the outside, and to feel inner relief. For families, it is an opportunity to better understand their loved ones and see what lies behind their silence or restraint.”
After the creative part, participants shared their works and the personal stories behind each mask. These stories carried strength, gratitude, and hope. The atmosphere of the event was warm and trusting — another step toward recovery and mutual understanding among those who have gone through war and continue their journey toward inner peace.
